Archery
Bowhunting basics for these three states
How archery and crossbow rules differ in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, without gear reviews.
The season and the weapon are separate questions
A date can be inside an archery season and still be the wrong license, the wrong broadhead, or the wrong peninsula. This page sticks to rules the agencies printed for 2026. It does not review bows, rests, or broadhead brands. Nobody here has tested your equipment.
Pennsylvania treats a legal crossbow as archery equipment, then writes the details in two places
The deer archery seasons allow long, recurve, and compound bows with a minimum draw weight of 35 pounds, and crossbows, with a broadhead at least 7/8 inch wide and no longer than 3.25 inches. Magnifying scopes and red-dot sights may be used on crossbows. Hunters in the archery seasons may not possess a firearm, with a narrow License-to-Carry exception that the digest says does not cover most sporting arms.Source: PGC, 2026–27 Hunting & Trapping Digest. The regular-firearms arms list also names crossbows and prints a minimum 125-pound draw weight there. Because the archery bullet does not repeat that number, read both blocks in the digest before you assume the poundage. An archery add-on is required for the archery seasons. Orange is not required while deer hunting in those seasons. It is required if you carry a bow during a firearms deer season.Source: PGC, 2026–27 Hunting & Trapping Digest. Checked November 7, 2026.
Statewide archery is October 3–November 20 and December 26–January 24, 2027. WMUs 2B, 5C, and 5D open September 19 and run the first segment through November 27. Sundays inside a season are open for deer. That is a 2026–27 change the digest explains, with leftover limits in some southeastern state parks.Source: PGC, final 2026–27 seasons; PGC, 2026–27 Hunting & Trapping Digest. Wisconsin uses one calendar and two licenses
Archery and crossbow dates are the same: September 12 through January 3, 2027, and through January 31, 2027 in metro subunits and the farmland units the season-structure map marks. The licenses are not the same. Buy the one you will carry, or buy the upgrade if you will carry both.Source: Wisconsin DNR, 2026 deer season dates and bag limits; Wisconsin DNR, deer licensing requirements. A crossbow has a 100-pound minimum draw weight on the weapons page. Deer, bear, and elk must be hunted with a single expanding projectile: an arrow, a bolt, or a bullet of that design. A bow buck authorization cannot be filled with a rifle, even during the nine-day gun season. If you are still in the woods with a bow while a firearm season is open, the blaze-orange clothing rule is on.Source: Wisconsin DNR, weapons and ammunition; Wisconsin DNR, 2026 deer season dates and bag limits; Wisconsin DNR, highly visible clothing. Michigan is straightforward in the Lower Peninsula and narrow in the Upper Peninsula
Archery is October 1–November 14 and December 1–January 1. A crossbow is legal for both segments in the Lower Peninsula, and for the early segment statewide. In the Upper Peninsula late segment, a crossbow or modified bow is unlawful unless you hold a disability permit or you are a resident senior using a senior deer license, senior combo, or senior universal antlerless license. That senior rule starts September 12, 2026. The same crossbow limit applies to the three-day Upper Peninsula muzzleloader season.Source: Michigan DNR, 2026 deer hunting regulations. Crossbow bolts and quarrels have to be at least 14 inches long and carry a broadhead at least 7/8 inch wide. During archery season you generally cannot carry a firearm while bowhunting. The regulations list the exceptions, including a concealed-pistol license, which still does not let you shoot deer with that pistol. Hunter orange is not required for archery gear during archery season. It is required during any firearm deer season, including if you are the person carrying the bow.Source: Michigan DNR, 2026 deer hunting regulations. Checked November 7, 2026.
November 10–14 is the quiet period. Archery season is still open. Rifle and slug-gun transport is tightly limited. If your plan is a bow, leave the rifle case out of the truck unless you fit an exception you have actually read.Source: Michigan DNR, 2026 deer hunting regulations. Checked November 7, 2026.
A short practice list that is not a regulation
Paper sight-in is not hunting, and Michigan says you do not need a hunting license to shoot at an identifiable artificial target with no attempt to take game. Pennsylvania’s public ranges on game lands have their own permit and hour rules. None of that tells you your broadhead hits where your field point did. Confirm zero with the broadhead you will hunt, at the distance you will actually shoot, before opening day. That is practice advice, not a law.Source: Michigan DNR, 2026 deer hunting regulations; PGC, 2026–27 Hunting & Trapping Digest. Checked November 7, 2026.
